January 2023 - Acoma Pottery

As we start a new year, we would like to sincerely thank our customers for visiting us on-line and in our store throughout this past year. We've had a lot of fun ordering products we think you'll like and we wish you the very best in the coming year!

This month, we take a close look at Acoma pottery. Read on and enjoy!

The Acoma Pueblo, also known as Sky City, is located approximately one hour west of Albuquerque, NM. Acoma pottery began over 1,000 years ago. Acoma pottery along with Pueblo pottery, is known around the world for its remarkable beauty and craftmanship.

For over a thousand years each piece of pottery has been created completely by hand. Pueblo potters do not use a wheel. Instead, they use a traditional horizontal method of coiling to form the pots.

After each pot is formed, the artist polishes the pot with a natural polishing stone such as a river stone, then paints it with a vegetable dye, mineral or commercial slip. Finally it is fired outside.

Acoma pottery is known for a matte polychrome style featuring orange, and black designs on a white background. Acoma pottery can be identified by fluted rims, very thin walls and complex geometric designs.

The Pickle Barrel Trading Post offers a nice selection of this striking pottery. We look forward to seeing you soon!
